Derived from the Greek word for "sailor", the Nautilus is considered a living fossil, as they have lived and survived as a species for millions of years without changing much from their prehistoric ancestors. As it grows this cousin of the octopus creates a larger and larger shell, sealing off the smaller parts into chambers. During the Renaissance period nautilus shells were popular items, and were commonly used in art, sculpture and literature. The nautilus shell is universally recognized as a positive feminine symbol which represents birth, life, resurrection, love and good luck.
